Hajra Meeks has taught International/Islamic History at the University of California, Merced for four years. She received her BS in Physics from USF and her MSc in International History at the London School of Economics. She also creates Islamic art and has exhibited throughout California.
What is the link between your spirituality and your creativity?
My spirituality is reflected in my art explicitly and implicitly: Many of my works are Islamic-themed, and directly relate to scripture and/or God's names. Other works seek to depict the beauty God has placed around us, in different people, animals, and cultures.
Where do your draw your inspiration from?
I am inspired by my faith to appreciate the beauty around me and to express it creatively through art or the written word. I am also influenced by my hybrid identities, which find their way into my pieces--American, Muslim, Pakistani, Persian, Female, Californian.
What will you be hoping to take away from this program?
I hope to share my work with others at the CSP event and to enjoy what they will share with me as well. Together, God-willing, I hope we can all learn from each other and continue to grow.
